What separates a bare driver from an enclosed speaker?

A diaphragm radiates from both its front and rear surfaces. A bare driver normally relies on the device housing, rear cavity, outlet and mounting structure. When the front and rear waves meet around the housing with an opposing phase, low-frequency output can be reduced. A rear enclosure confines rear radiation and creates a more repeatable acoustic boundary. PUI Audio’s speaker enclosure design guide treats rear radiation, enclosure volume, frequency response and SPL as linked design variables.

An enclosed speaker includes part of the cavity and mounting boundary, but it does not replace device-level acoustic design. The front cavity, outlet, grille, sealing and mounting surface still change the installed response.

Rear volume, sealing and the outlet

Rear volume affects system resonance and low-frequency response. A small cavity can raise the resonance frequency; leakage changes the effective sealed boundary; and a vibrating housing or mounting surface can add structural noise. The front outlet is also an acoustic impedance: aperture size, path length, turns, grille open area, fabric and adhesive can attenuate output or create response peaks and dips. Record the distance from the speaker face to the device opening, seal compression, effective open area and any obstruction in the path.

When should an enclosed speaker be evaluated first?

Choose an enclosed speaker when the device is space-constrained, the rear cavity needs to be frozen early, or the connection and mounting boundary should be standardized. Review Jiachuan’s enclosed-speaker category and separate models such as JC-SPK1713-BOX01-8R1W-WL, JC-SPK2415-BOX01-8R1W-W, JC-SPK3520-BOX01-8R1W-W, JC-SPKD30-BOX02-8R1W-W and JC-SPK4016-BOX01-4R2W-WL. These are independent model references with different envelopes or connections; the links do not imply interchangeability.

When the device team already has a defined rear cavity, mounting surface and outlet and wants to tune the enclosure itself, a bare driver may be the better starting point. Both types must be validated in the actual installation state.

Electrical and acoustic parameters must be evaluated together

At a specified frequency and voltage, impedance affects current demand. Speaker impedance varies with frequency, so a nominal value does not represent the load across the entire band. Amplifier matching also requires output-voltage and current capability, signal type, limiting, thermal conditions and the actual operating state. TI’s audio power-amplifier design report explains the relationship between output voltage, load impedance and output power; TI’s amplifier performance-measurement guide advises evaluating actual voltage and current when the load varies with frequency. Rated power must likewise be interpreted with the waveform, duration, cooling and amplifier limiting. Evaluate amplifier voltage/current capability, load impedance and clipping risk together with the specific SKU.

SPL is not a standalone dB number. Record the test frequency, input voltage or power, distance, angle, baffle or IEC condition, averaging method and tolerance. F0 identifies a resonance-related point; frequency response shows acoustic level versus frequency; an impedance curve shows electrical load versus frequency. Results measured under different conditions cannot be ranked directly.

Comparable sample-testing procedure

  1. Standardize the source and input: use the same audio file, sample rate, input level and signal chain for every candidate.
  2. Fix the mechanical state: use the same mounting surface, rear volume, sealing, outlet, grille and speaker-to-opening distance. Photograph the installation so the boundary condition can be reproduced.
  3. Check fit and electrical connection: verify the mechanical envelope, mounting, polarity, connector or terminal position and wiring before measuring impedance and applying the amplifier drive.
  4. Measure under defined acoustic conditions: with the specified baffle or free-field setup, record frequency response, SPL, F0 and distortion, together with frequency, input, distance, angle, averaging method and tolerance.
  5. Validate in the real housing: check speech intelligibility, leakage, structural noise, audible artifacts and long-duration operation in the intended enclosure and drive condition.
  6. Preserve traceability: record the SKU, drawing or datasheet revision, sample lot, installation photos, test setup and acceptance result.
